Thomas W. Jones

Biography

Tom Jones joined the faculty of the School of Physics and Astronomy in 1978, coming from a staff position at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Virginia. Early research mostly focused on theoretical models of active galactic nuclei. In recent years his research has centered on using numerical simulations to understand dynamical fluid and plasma behaviors, especially including acceleration and transport of relativistic charged particles (cosmic rays) and their signature emissions in association with astrophysical phenomena ranging from supernova remnants to radio galaxies to megaparsec-scaled structures in clusters of galaxies. These efforts have also contributed to developments of several novel computational codes used to address these issues. He works with collaborators locally and across the globe.
