Abstract Algebra: An Inquiry-Based Approach by Hodge, Schlicker, and Sundstrom, 2014. (On reserve in the Mathematics Library, Vincent Hall 310.) Errata and typos here. The ebook for this text is available through UMN's library.
This is an introductory course in modern algebra. It differs from Math 5285H: Fundamental Structures of Algebra by being less theoretical and having somewhat different subject matter (although there is some overlap). We will discuss topics including equivalence relations, greatest common divisor, prime decomposition, modular arithmetic, groups, rings, fields, Chinese remainder theorem, matrices over commutative rings, polynomials over fields.
