Call for US Ph.D. students to apply for extended visits to European Cognitive Systems and Robotics research groups for Summer 2012

Eligibility: full-time students attending a university in the US.
Requirements: participation in the doctoral mentoring consortium at AAMAS. Students who have not applied to it, but are selected for an extended visit, will be admitted to the Doctoral Consortium. Research visit of 6-8 weeks to the chosen European group.
Selection criteria: full-time student. Preference will be given to students who are US citizens or permanent residents. Consideration will be given to progress in degree, evidence of research excellence, benefits expected from participation.
Expected number of awards: 9.
The award will cover travel to Europe from the US, travel within Europe to AAMAS, registration to AAMAS, and a stipend to cover living expenses during the visit (up to $2500/month). [Travel funding subject to final NSF approval]. Federal regulations require to use a US carrier for the transatlantic part of the travel, even if it is more expensive than a non-US carrier.

  1. a curriculum vitae (max 2 pages) that covers background (name, university), education (degree sought, year/status in degree, previous degrees), employment, and relevant experience in research (publications, presentations, conferences attended, etc). Not needed if you have applied for the Doctoral Mentoring Consortium at AAMAS.
  2. a two-page extended abstract of the thesis research, which describes research completed and plans for remaining work. Not needed if you have applied for the Doctoral Mentoring Consortium at AAMAS.
  3. a personal statement (1-2 pages max) with answers to the following questions:
    1. expected graduation
    2. type of job desired (research+teaching, teaching, research, research+development)
    3. what do you expect to accomplish in the visit?
    4. do you speak any language other than English?
    5. are you a US citizen or permanent resident?
  4. an estimate of cost of travel to the conference
  5. a letter of reference from the advisor, addressing progress toward the degree, the research topic and its significance, expected graduation date, expected benefit to the student from attending and ability to work with others
You do not need to have found a host in Europe, we will find it for you. However, if you know a professor/research group you would like to visit, encourage them to apply to be hosts.

To maximize interaction oppotunities, no more than one student per site will be allowed.
