HAWC+ imaging polarimetry of M82 at 53 microns. The polarization vectors are superimposed over a composite of HST images, including the H alpha emission in red that clearly shows the super-galactic wind generated by the massive starburst in the center of the galaxy. The 53um polarization shows that the magnetic field has been en-trained by the wind and covers a surprisingly large region spanning at least 700 pc along the disk. The wind must be caused by star formation over a much larger region of M82 that was indicated by the bipolar outflow seen in H alpha and other tracers. NASA PR link, paper link Jones et al. 2019.
