Aleksandar Lazarević

I am currently a Research Associate at the Army High Performance Computing Research Center, Computer Science Department, University of Minnesota. I am working on problems related to applying data mining techniques to intrusion detection together with Prof. Vipin Kumar and Prof. Jaideep Srivastava. We are leading the MINDS (Minnesota Intrusion Detection System) project. I received my Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from the Center for Information Science and Technology, College of Science and Technology, Temple University in December 2001. In August 2000 I transferred from School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Washington State University, where I was for three years. I received the M.S. degree in Computer Science in 1997. and B.S. degree in Computer Science and Computer Engineering in 1994. from the School of Electrical Engineering at University of Belgrade.

My research interests include:

• Data Mining Applications in Network Intrusion Detection - MINDS project
• Anomaly Detection / Outlier Detection in Security Applications
• Data Mining for Damage Detection in Mechanical Structures
• Learning from the rare classes (Credit card fraud detection, Network Intrusion Detection, ...)
• Machine Learning: combining predictors (ensemble methods, mixture of experts), supervised and unsupervised learning, algorithms for prediction in heterogeneous data
• Knowledge Discovery in Databases (Spatial Data Analysis and Modeling, Brain Image Classification, Microarray Data Analysis)
• Distributed and Parallel Data Mining
• Knowledge Discovery in Business Valuation, E-Commerce Applications, Web Mining
• Neural Networks
• Parallel processing in superscalar and VLIW architectures

During my Ph.D studies, I was working on the following research projects: 

• Data mining in brain imaging 
• Data reduction for spatial-temporal knowledge discovery
• Business valuation and intangible assets analysis in knowledge discovery
• Distributed knowledge discovery in spatial databases (project funded by INEEL).
