1282 Spring Semester 2007
Calculus with Biological Emphasis II
Text:
Neuhauser, Claudia, Calculus for Biology and Medicine, Second
Edition. We will cover chapters 7-11.
Grading Policy: Homework: 15 homework assignments
worth 5 points each, for a total of 75 points; Quizzes: best 10
in-class quizzes worth 10 points each, for a total of 100 points;
Participation: 25 points; Midterms: 3 midterms worth 150
points each, for a total of 450 points; Final Exam: 350
points. Total Points: 1000.
Exams:
The dates of the midterms are Thursdays, February 8, March 8, and
April 19. You will take these exams in your discussion section.
The final exam is Monday, May 7,
from 1:30 to 4:30 PM.
Make-ups: Students must make arrangements in advance if they
will not be handing in homework on time or will miss a quiz. If you
miss an exam for any reason, please contact Duane Nykamp or your teaching
assistant as soon as possible. There are no makeup exams given in this
course. If you do fail to take a midterm exam for any reason, your
grade on that exam will be equal to the grade you receive on the next
midterm (possibly adjusted to reflect overall exam averages). If you
miss the the last midterm, we will use your grade on the final exam.
If you miss two exams, you will receive no credit for either of them.
In-class Quizzes:
Beginning the second week, you will have a short quiz each Thursday in
discussion section (except for midterm days). We will drop your
lowest score, so that your grade will be based on your best 10 quiz scores.
Participation:
You are expected to actively participate during discussion sections.
This participation will be the basis for awarding the 25 points.
Attendance:
We will conduct the class under the presumption that you have attended
all lectures and discussion sections. In particular, you are
responsible for any announcements made in class.
Homework: Unless otherwise indicated, the assigned problems for
each week are due the following Thursday in discussion section. The
lecture schedule and homework assignments as listed on a separate page. Your homework score will
be based on your work to complete these problems, rather than getting
correct answers.
Scholastic Conduct: We expect the highest standards of conduct from
members of this class. Cases of academic dishonesty will be treated
with
utmost seriousness. See Student
Conduct Code. More generally, we expect students to be actively
involved with the issues presented in class. In particular, you should
be prepared each week to ask and answer questions.
Student Privacy and Course Website: In this class, our use of
technology will sometimes make students' names and U of M Internet IDs
visible within the course website, but only to other students in the
same class. Since we are using a secure, password-protected course
website, this will not increase the risk of identity theft or spamming
for anyone in the class. If you have concerns about the visibility of
your Internet ID, please contact Duane Nykamp for further
information.
Incompletes: We will consider giving you an incomplete if you
have successfully completed all but a small portion of the work of the
course and some severe, unexpected event prevents you from completing
the course. This means that you must have taken at least 2 midterms
and must be doing at least C- work. We cannot give you an incomplete
simply because you are behind in your work. In that case, you should
try to drop the course.
Drop Dates: You may drop the course without permission before
the end of the eighth week of the semester (March 12, 2007). If you
drop before the end of the second week, no mention of the course will
appear on your transcripts. Otherwise, you receive a "W" for the
course. However, it will cost you more money, the later you drop the
course.
