Each group will publish a single response to homeworks 1 through 4
on their web-page.

Tasks for
Trends and
Project
are described below along with
Examination 1 and
Examination 2 .
Each group is expected to write a short review of a sub-area within
Computational Geo-Informatics using a few encyclopedia articles.
This homework will help us learn about current trends beyond
the textbook.
- T1. Summarize the relevant chapter from the textbook
in 500 words. Describe new information you learned from reading
the assigned set of articles (500 words). Prepare a short
(10-slides) presentation to convey the new information to your
peers in the class. Use appropriate illustrations, examples,
review questions and
pithy statements
to engage your audience.
- T2. Peer-review assigned group's summary narrative and
presentation.
Briefly summarize the narrative and presentation (50 words).
Describe what new information you learned from this work
relative to the information available in corresponding
textbook-chapter (50 words).
Make constructive suggestions to improve the work
listing 3 to 4 specific action-able suggestions (50 words).
The goal is to improve the presentation towards teaching
new ideas in encyclopedia articles relative to textbook.
The audience consists of the students in present offering
of this course.
If appropriate, may use IEEE's
Instructions for reviewers of survey papers.
- T3. Publish revised narrative and presentation using comments
from peer review. Also publish a 500 word narrative summarizing the
revisions for suggested improvements from reviewers.
- T4. Make a presentation in the class on assigned day.
Oral presentation in the class using 10 to 15 transparencies.
Candidate slides include summary of relevant textbook chapter,
new concepts learned from the articles,
and reflections.
Each group is expected to write a term paper or
carry out a design/implementation project.
Consider evaluating spatial aspects (e.g. location awareness)
of either an emerging societal application
(e.g. homeland security, climate change, public safety,
emergency response, market analysis, etc.)
or a software/hardware platform (e.g. HTML5, facebook,
twitter, foursquare, iphone, android, Win-CE, Google Earth,
Google Maps API, Microsoft Bing API, Arcgis.com,
Crimestat, etc.). Selected papers from
GIS literature on Homeland Security, and
GIS literature on Computing
are made available to provide additional options.
The process has following steps:
- P0. Define the overall objective of your project in
a short paragraph specifying the following:
- overall question to be addressed
- importance of the question in terms of social applications or
theoretical significance
- P1. Identify key codified (e.g. documents) and tacit
(e.g. people, software) information sources for the topic.
Describe how tacit sources will be leveraged in your project.
- P2A. (1000 Words)
Provide a 1000-word summary of readings of codified
information (e.g. documents) and their limitations.
Refine your project objective to address the limitations
of current codified knowledge.
- P2B. (1000 Words)
List specific questions for learning from tacit sources,
such as people and hardware/software platforms.
Provide a plan for addressing these questions.
For example, list interview question for key people and/or
list specific experiments with software/hardware platforms.
List challenges (e.g. lack of objectivity, reproducibility of results)
you may face in working with tacit sources and
how you will overcome those.
- P3. Complete the planned work and publish a report.
Report should include a summary of codified information,
goals for learning from tacit sources along with challenges.
You may reuse material submitted in last homework.
Report should describe the novel information learned from
tacit sources and reflections (e.g. objectivity and generalizability
of results, assumptions, future work).
It should provide adequate details of methods to allow
peers to reproduce the results if desired.
Limit your report to 4000 words.
- P4. Peer-review assigned group's project report.
Briefly summarize the project (50 words).
Describe what new information you learned from this work (50 words).
Make constructive suggestions to improve the work
listing 3 to 4 specific action-able suggestions (50 words).
- P5. Revise your project using the feedback from reviewers.
Prepare a 500 word narrative summarizing the revisions
for suggested improvements from reviewers.
Place the revised presentation and report on your web-site
and ensure that the course web-site has a link to your material.
- P6.
Oral presentation in the class using 10 to 15 transparencies.
Candidate slides include summary of codified information,
questions for learning from tacit information,
approach, information learned, and reflections
(assumptions and potential extensions).
- O1. Write a short (1000 word) essay summarizing
what you learned in this course. Include a paragraph (100-words)
suggesting specific improvements to future offerings.
