Math 5285H (Fundamental Structures of Algebra I), Fall 2009


The goal of this first semester is to introduce modern concepts in abstract algebra. Topics include:

  • Review of linear algebra
  • Vector spaces
  • Group theory
  • Specific examples including various groups of symmetries

The course textbook is Artin's "Algebra." (Thankfully, it does not publish a new edition every year.)

Office hours on Wednesdays have permanently moved to 2:30-3:30pm. Office hours on Mondays remain at 1:00pm-2:00pm.
