Objectives

This is the second half of a full-year honors algebra course. We will be covering rings, modules, and Galois theory.

Prerequisites

The prerequisite for this course is Math 5285H or equivalent.

Textbooks

The text for this course is Algebra, by Michael Artin. You are encouraged to look at other texts, such as Dummit and Foote's Abstract algebra. The process of learning mathematics benefits from looking at multiple perspectives.

Homework

Homework will come in the form of problem sets, each with a week to complete. Barring unusual circumstances, late homework will not be accepted. Homework will be returned either in-class or (if done so earlier) in the mailboxes on the main floor of Vincent

We encourage you to discuss homework problems with your classmates, including strategies for solving different kinds of problems. However, when you actually write up your solutions, you must do this on your own.

Exams

There will be no exams.

University policies
