Math 5615H: Honors Analysis I

COURSE SYLLABUS

Fall 2024

CLASS MEETINGS: MW 12:20-2:15 (Vincent Hall 207)

INSTRUCTOR: Sasha Voronov

OFFICE: VinH 324

PHONE: (612) 624-0355

E-MAIL ADDRESS: voronov@umn.edu. Don't hesitate to drop me a line.

INTERNET: All class announcements and assignments will be posted on Canvas and NOT handed out in class. In the beginning, I will maintain a publicly accessible class web page http://www-users.cse.umn.edu/~voronov/5615-24/, which will later be abandoned.

OFFICE HOURS (tentative): Office Hours (all in VinH 324 and on Zoom): Mon 11:15-12:05, Wed 2:30-3:20, Thu 12:05-12:55 (sometimes only on Zoom, see Canvas announcements), or by appointment.

TEXTBOOK:  Analysis I by Terence Tao, fourth edition, 2022. Hard copies are available for purchase through Course Works, at the bookstore, and on the Internet. The electronic edition of the book is available for free through our library.

Homework will be given using the fourth edition (2022), but the author seems to be saying the exercise numbering is the same in all editions.

GOALS: This is the first course of "analysis with proofs." The goal of the course is to learn real mathematics by providing rigorous foundation to topics most of which you have seen in freshman Calculus.

COVERAGE: Chapters 1-11 of the text. This contains foundations of number systems, set theory, sequences, series, functions, including continuity and differentiability, and if time permits, the Riemann integral.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: You will master the art of proofs; you will have an in-depth knowledge of the above chapters of Real Analysis; you will become problem solvers; you will develop an analytical way of thinking; you will be friends with intellectual challenge; you will become experts in learning hard stuff fairly quickly.

PREREQUISITES: Calculus I-IV and Math 2283, 3283W or a similar proof-based course; or just Honors Calculus I-IV.

GETTING HELP:

HOMEWORK: Homework will be assigned and collected electronically: you will be uploading it to Gradescope through Canvas. Homework will be due every Thursday by 11:59 p.m., except the first week of classes, the Thanksgiving week, and the test weeks. A random selection of problems will be graded. Late homework will be assessed a penalty. Also note that selected homework problems (or similar) may be given on tests. That is another reason why you should do homework during the week, rather than just before the homework is due, and, moreover, remember the ideas and techniques used in your solutions. Getting together with other students (that is, in study groups) is a very efficient way to do homework, see also GETTING HELP above. However, everyone should work on every problem; a solution you get together with other students should be written down in your own words. Copying someone else's solution will be penalized. On the homework, please write with whom (or what version of AI) you worked.

MIDTERM EXAMS: There will be two one-hour midterm exams in our regular classroom (VinH 207): Wednesdays, October 16 and December 11. These will be closed-book, closed-notes, no-device exams. You will be allowed to bring a two-sided 5.5" x 8.5" cheat sheet.

FINAL EXAM: The final exam will be on December 16 (NEW DATE), 1:30-3:30 p.m. Same rules as on midterms.

MAKE-UP TESTS: There will be no make-up tests.

GRADING POLICY: Grades will be assigned on a curve, using the following weights:

Class participation may be taken into account. I expect you to put enough hard work to earn grades not lower than a B. The curve does not exclude the possibility of everybody getting A's, though, but this happens rather rarely.

IMPORTANT DATES:

September 4: First course meeting.

September 12: First homework due.

September 16: Last day to add to the course without college approval; last day to drop the course without a W grade.

October 16: Midterm I.

November 28-29: Thanksgiving Break.

December 11: Midterm II; last course meeting.

December 16 (NEW DATE): Final Exam, 1:30-3:30 p.m., regular classroom (VinH 207)

Syllabus created on 9/4/23. Thursday office hours adjusted slightly and Discord link updated on 9/12/24. Final date changed and the grader info added on 09/25/24.
