An introduction to algebraic theories

Julie Bergner (Notre Dame)

The notion of an algebraic theory provides a categorical means of discussing many algebraic objects such as monoids, groups, and commutative rings. In addition, an algebraic theory can be used to describe an algebraic structure on a space. This talk will include the definition of algebraic theories and some examples illustrating how they provide a concise way of expressing various algebraic structures.
